A huge earthquake shook the land right at the very time Christ died. "The earth shook and the rocks split." Matt. We can now enter His presence through Christ Himself. Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice so the veil, or separation, was no longer needed. This also was a complete miracle from God's hand, signifying that He had opened the door for us to come in and have relationship with Him. The size of the veil would have made it impossible for any human to tear this in 2 pieces. 27:51 Sometimes in our minds, we picture a thin veil covering this entrance, but history records that the veil was actually about 60 feet tall and up to 4" in thickness. At the very moment that Jesus breathed his last breath, the Temple veil that covered the entrance to the Holy of Holies, the actual dwelling place of God among the people, was torn in 2 from top to bottom. Even nature all around gave testimony of who Christ was and the grief of what was happening. This was a very real picture of both physical and spiritual darkness that occurs without belief in Christ. It's hard to imagine what the people were feeling when they saw this happen, but I would think that some became fearful, terrified, realizing what they'd done, and that Jesus was indeed who He said He was. 27:25 From noon on Friday until 3 pm, the skies grew dark. So let’s make sure that we dwell in the light of God’s truth where there is eternal life and blessing rather than to be cast into the outer darkness of judgment doomed to be separated from God forever.- "Darkness came over all the land." Matt. God, in His ultimate power, has brought darkness on the earth before and He’s going to do it again in the future. In Matthew 24 Jesus also speaks of darkness shortly before His second coming, and in Revelation 6 darkness is mentioned as coming with the opening of the sixth seal. Similarly, in Exodus 14, God used a pillar of cloud to separate the Israelites from the Egyptians while the Egyptians experienced darkness on the one side of the cloud, the Israelites had light on the other. ![]() In Exodus 10, for example, God brought a plague of darkness on the Egyptians, yet the Israelites still had sunshine where they lived in the nearby land of Goshen. Significantly, this isn’t the first time we witnessed such unnatural outworkings in the Bible. So, since natural explanations fail to adequately explain how darkness can occur while the sun is still shining, it seems best to conclude that God Himself accomplished this supernaturally. A second problem with the solar eclipse theory is that the Bible says that the darkness lasted 3 hours, but the maximum time that the sun can be eclipsed is only 8 minutes. For the Hebrews celebrate the Passover on the 14th day according to the moon, and the passion of our Saviour falls on the day before the passover but an eclipse of the sun takes place only when the moon comes under the sun.” In other words, at the time of the crucifixion, the moon was at the opposite end of its orbit path (when it was in its full phase) meaning a natural solar eclipse was not possible on the day of Christ’s crucifixion. He wrote, “This darkness, Thallus, in the third book of his History, calls as appears to me without reason, an eclipse of the sun. ![]() As a matter of fact, North African Christian leader Julius Africanus writing in A.D. First, a solar eclipse doesn’t line up with the timing of Jesus’ crucifixion. ![]() However, there are at least two problems with this idea.
